Arizona Animal Wellness Center provides advanced and pain-free dental care for your pet. By three years of age, 85% of animals have some form of dental disease. We highly recommend pets have an oral examination every 6-12 months to identify potential problem areas and prevent underlying pain. If we find that your pet would benefit from dental therapy we will recommend this procedure and discuss it in detail with you.

Advanced Team Training

We have advanced our dental care program through rigorous training. Our doctors and technicians have completed intensive in-house training as well as local and national training seminars in advanced dental care. Dental Radiology

We use digital dental radiology to identify problem areas that exist below the gumline. By using complete oral digital radiographs we are able to find problems that otherwise might not be found.

• Retained baby teeth or baby teeth that never erupted

• Bone Infections

• Recession of bone due to advanced dental disease

• Bone tumors and bone cysts

All of these diseases may go undiagnosed and undetected during a standard dental examination and cleaning. Full mouth radiographs are the key to thorough oral examinations and disease prevention.

Pain Management

Arizona Animal Wellness Center also uses advanced pain techniques that go beyond pain medication both before and after surgery. We use local and regional nerve blocks, which are much like the use of Novocain in humans - only your pet is asleep during administration of a local pain anesthetic and cannot "feel the poke". All of our patients receive pain medication to ensure their comfort due to the potential for dental disease to hurt both before and after dental procedures.

We also use our advanced radiofrequency surgery unit (Ellman Surgitron) to remove oral masses, gum disease, and oral tumors. This provides less pain production in comparison to using a traditional scalpel. It can also minimize bleeding and helps promote faster healing.

Advanced Dental Services

Arizona Animal Wellness Center is also able to provide advanced dental care with restorative dentistry by using bonding material to repair defects in the enamel of teeth. This can prevent future problems with a tooth. This is similar to a "filling" or bonding material used in human tooth repair.

Home Care

Unless your pet’s teeth are brushed daily, plaque, which is an accumulation of bacteria, will build up at the gum line. The resulting infection will eventually loosen and destroy the tooth. The infection under the gum line can also spread to the liver, kidneys, and heart.

You can purchase a soft-bristled, or finger toothbrush for your pet along with veterinarian-approved toothpaste. (Human toothpaste should not be given to your pet. It has chemicals that should not be swallowed.) We have many options to help with home care for your pet. Brushing, toothpaste impregnated dental chews, dental diets, oral rinses, water additives, and dental wipes are some of the options we have available to help you care for your pet's teeth.

Once you notice plaque or tartar accumulation, it is time for a professional cleaning by Arizona Animal Wellness Center. Do not wait. Bacteria attaches itself to tartar and plaque, which irritates the gum tissues. When properly treated, the inflammation will resolve. When left untreated, it will progress to periodontitis, which is characterized by pockets of chronic infection. This can ultimately lead to oral pain, severe infections, and tooth and bone loss.
